Territorial National Bank and National Currency

National Bank notes from Territories are some of the most highly sought after and valuable notes.
Territorial national currency notes are the pinnacle of the national currency collecting hobby.
There are only 14 states that issued national currency in territorial form plus Porto Rico.
Here are links to all bank note issuing territorial states and the banks in those states.
Below I list all the states that issued national currency in territorial form.



  1. Alaska Territory National Bank Notes
    Alaska had three territorial National Bank charters.
    It became a state in 1959 so all Alaska National Currency bills are territorials.
  2. Arizona Territory National Bank Notes
    Arizona had twenty territorial National Bank charters.
    It was the last state in the continental US to became a state on Valentines day 1912.
  3. Colorado Territory National Bank Notes
    Colorado had thirteen territorial National Bank charters.
    Colorado achieved statehood in August 1867, pretty early!
  4. Hawaii Territory National Bank Notes
    Hawaii had seven territorial National Bank charters.
    Hawaii came into statehood in August 1959. The 50th state All Hawaiian nationals are territorials.
  5. Idaho Territory National Bank Notes
    Idaho had ten territorial National Bank charters.
    Idaho was granted statehood in 1890, the 43rd state.
  6. Montana Territory National Bank Notes
    Montana had twenty six territorial National Bank charters.
    Montana accepted statehood in 1889, the 41st state.
  7. Nebraska Territory National Bank Notes
    Nebraska had only three territorial National Bank charters.
    Nebraska got statehood in 1867 making territorial notes very rare!
  8. New Mexico Territory National Bank Notes
    New Mexico had only fifty eight territorial National Bank charters.
    New Mexico got statehood in 1912, the making it the 47th state
  9. North Dakota Territory National Bank Notes
    North Dakota had thirty seven territorial National Bank charters.
    North Dakota got statehood in 1889 at the same time as South Dakota. 39th or 40th State in? No one knows...
  10. Oklahoma Territory National Bank Notes
    Oklahoma had three hundred sixty one(!) three territorial National Bank charters, by far the largest count.
    Oklahoma got statehood in 1907 which was pretty late. Oklahoma has the most common territorial notes.
  11. Porto Rico Territory National Bank Notes
    Porto Rico had only 1 charter that issued period.
    Porto Rico is still an American territory but it's now called Puerto Rico
  12. South Dakota Territory National Bank Notes
    South Dakota had forty six territorial National Bank charters.
    South Dakota got statehood in 1889 at the same time as North Dakota. 30th or 40th State in? No one knows...
  13. Utah Territory National Bank Notes
    Utah had twenty territorial National Bank charters.
    Utah got statehood in 1896, the 45th state to join the Union.
  14. Washington Territory National Bank Notes
    Washington had fifty territorial National Bank charters.
    Washington got statehood in 1889, the 42th state into the Union.
