Due to an act of the Congress of 1878 the Bureau of Engraving and Printing began issuing a new kind of currency called Silver certificates. These new notes were backed by an equal amount of silver held by the Federal Government. Silver certificate paper money has been issued in many different series over the years. The designs are some of the most beautiful and sometimes controversial notes the BEP issued. The series 1896 educational series was notable in this regard. Beautiful but racy, they were only issued for one year before being cancelled due to the outcry. The note below is a beautiful and rare Series 1880 $100 Silver Certificate. I have only shown the Silver Certificate issues that are likely to be in your hands. There were higher denominated silver certificates but such as the $100, $500 and even $1000. Sadly, high denomination notes are so rare as to be considered non-collectible. If you have a large sized silver certificate I will be happy to value it for you.
