The Series 1890 Treasury Note issues were a very pretty deisgn with large brown seals and ornate reverses that fill the full design. These are generally more valuable than the Series 1891 bills which had more plain design. They were originally backed by silver bullion which is why they are also known as "Coin notes". The series came in denominations $1, $2, $5, $10, $20, $50, $100 and $1000. The 1890 and 1891 Treasury note issues are not common especially in denominations higher than $1.00. The $10 and higher denomination Treasury Note is especially scarce and eagerly collected especially in nice grades. The notes all feature the clause below. The United States of America will pay to bearer X dollars in coin. This note is a legal tender at it's face value in payment of all debts public and private except when otherwise expressly stipulated in the contract.
