A star note (aka Replacement note) simply put, is a note with a printed star next to the serial number. The BEP prints star notes (replacement notes) and uses them as an accounting device to the hobbies delight. While printing notes, if a note is damaged it is marked in red pencil or sticker to be pulled from production. Because pulling the note would cause a gap in the numerical sequence of the notes they can't just ignore it. They have to replace the damaged note with a new note. These replacement notes are printed with a star. In this way, the BEP keeps their numbering correct and the accounting easy to manage. Before 1910, the BEP would hand work the correct sequential serial number for a damaged note. It's easy to see why they decided to get away from that manual procedure. Star notes are estimated to be only 1% of the total population of notes. Due to their rarity and the cool "Star" factor these notes are avidly collected especially in large sized notes.
